The HiFi tier of Spotify is Coming, But not Anytime Soon

A story claims that the launch of Apple Music lossless put a damper on Spotify’s plans for its HiFi tier, but a Spotify administrative has affirmed that the new tier will still be introduced at some point.

A lossless tier that will be known as Spotify HiFi is scheduled to be released in 2021, according to an announcement made by Spotify. Two years later, an executive has stated that the HiFi tier would undoubtedly be introduced at some point in the future, although there is currently no information available regarding when this will take place.

The Verge claims that for more than a year, Spotify’s HiFi tier has been accessible to the company’s staff. Nevertheless, plans shifted when services like Apple Music and Amazon Prime Music made lossless audio available at no extra cost.

The story was formulated on the basis of an interview with Gustav Soderstrom, co-president of Spotify, that was carried out by Decoder as well as supplementary information gathered by The Verge. During the interview, the HiFi tier was discussed for a short period of time, Nevertheless, there was no mention of release dates or any other details.

According to what Soderstrom told Decoder, “We made the announcement, but after that, the industry shifted for a number of other reasons.” “We are going to carry it out, yet, we are doing it at any cost that is rational not only for ourselves but also for the people that listen to us. Because of the changes in the industry, we had to make adjustments.”

When asked for additional information regarding the reasons for the delay in the tier, Soderstrom refused to directly cite competitors or deals with record labels in response to the interviewer’s questions. Although the fact that Soderstrom did not directly express this, the report that was created claims that Apple Music’s launch of lossless at no extra cost ruined Spotify’s ambitions.

Spotify allegedly planned to provide lossless music at a more expensive tier and may still do so in the future. This premium tier has the potential to bring in more cash by providing features like spatial audio.

The subject of the interview discussed in the article was Spotify’s decision to adopt a video-sharing platform similar to TikTok. No information about when Spotify HiFi will be available or whether or not it would support spatial audio or any other formats was provided.
